How to turn a ChatGPT story into a book
To turn a ChatGPT story into a book, ask Inkbind for it in the same conversation or paste the text on our website. You check every page, then Lulu prints a 21.6 cm square hardback (£42) or paperback (£34) and it arrives in about two weeks. Both prices include delivery.
Perhaps you’ve written a bedtime story with ChatGPT, pictures and all, and want a copy to post to a grandparent or wrap up for Christmas. There are three ways to get it on paper, from least to most effort.
1. Ask for the book inside ChatGPT
With the Inkbind app connected, stay in the same conversation and write something like:
“Turn the bedtime story we just wrote about Isla and the dragon, with the pictures, into a hardback book and send it to my mum in Leeds.”
ChatGPT passes the text and pictures to Inkbind, which lays them out as a 21.6 cm (8.5 inch) square book and shows a preview you can page through in the chat. Change the title or dedication there, then open the checkout on our website, enter the address and pay by card. Lulu prints the book close to where it’s going, so a UK order is printed in the UK.
2. Paste it on our website
If you’d rather not connect an app, copy the story out of ChatGPT and paste it on our start page, leaving a blank line between pages. To keep the pictures, open each one in ChatGPT, press the download button, then upload it beside the right page. You get the same preview and the same book.
3. Do the layout yourself
For full control, set the text and pictures in a document at 21.6 × 21.6 cm with 3 mm of bleed on every side, export a PDF with the fonts embedded, and upload it to a print-on-demand service. You’ll also need a separate cover file sized to the spine width for your page count. It works, but it takes an evening, and the cover is where most people give up.
Making an AI children’s book that reads well
If you want to make your own children’s book with AI, the writing matters more than the tools. Before you print your children’s story:
- Keep each page to two or three short sentences. It will be read aloud, often by someone tired.
- Describe the main character the same way in every picture prompt (“a boy with red wellies and a stripy jumper”) so he looks like the same child throughout.
- Ask for square pictures. ChatGPT’s tall and wide formats print smaller on a square page.
- Read the whole thing aloud once and rewrite anything that doesn’t sound like you.
Will ChatGPT pictures be sharp enough?
Yes, though a square one prints a little smaller than the page. Printers like 300 dpi, and picture books get away with about 150. A square ChatGPT picture is 1024 pixels across, and wide or tall ones are 1536 × 1024. Stretched over a full 21.6 cm page, a square one comes out at around 120 dpi and looks soft. So Inkbind checks every picture’s real pixel size and never enlarges one beyond 150 dpi. A square one prints about 17 cm wide on a softly tinted page and stays sharp. Wide or tall pictures print nearly page-width. A picture of 1,250 pixels or more fills the page edge to edge. The preview shows which way each picture will print.
What it costs and when it arrives
An Inkbind paperback is £34 and a hardback £42, UK delivery included, for 32 pages or more. Extra copies of the same book to the same address are £25 each in hardback, which helps when both sets of grandparents want one. Printing and standard delivery take 7–12 working days, so for Christmas order by 3 December, or by 12 December with express. If the book arrives damaged, send us a photo within 30 days of delivery and we’ll reprint it free.
Check the characters before you print
If the story uses characters someone else owns, such as Elsa, Peppa Pig, Bluey or Spider-Man, no printer will produce it, and neither will we. Rename them. Children rarely mind when the dragon is named after their cat.
